Art A Whirl
Northrup King Building
May 20 - 22nd
Fri, 5 - 10
Sat 12 - 8
Sun 12 - 5

Art A Whirl is just 2 days away, kicking off this Friday at 5 pm. There's lots going on this year all over NE Mpls to celebrate the arts and the arts district, definitely worth the trip.

As always my studio doors, #432 in the Northrup King Building, will be open all weekend for AAW's hours but this year my workshop has moved to make room for 2 other artists to share my space: Andrew MacGuffie and Heidi Henderson. It's been an exciting albeit whirlwind transition that will continue to unfold over the coming months. Definitely stop in and see all the changes, and all the new and diverse work.

In addition to the changes in my studio, Andrew MacGuffie and I have teamed up, along with Magnolia Landscape and Design, to redo the Northrup King Building's greenspace, located in front of the building and surrounded by the parking lot. Andrew and I, as 3twelve, came up with the concept and general design idea for the Northrup King's Sculpture Garden, and worked with Magnolia Landscape to tweak the design into a comprehensive landscape renovation. There's a meandering paver path by Magnolia that creates a nice walking space and serves as an anchor for Andrew's various monumental sculptural planters, and my water fountain sculpture shown in process below. Andrew also created a large, curving metal retaining wall/sculpture that turned out really beautifully and is a must see space to visit, shown above right. All the various pieces will be installed, planted, and ready to enjoy Friday.

Lastly, Andrew also has organized an exciting inaugural event: the Nordeast Sculpture Tour. There are 7 participating businesses and buildings so far (view PDF map), each featuring one or two sculptures by various artists. Some of the destinations include: the Northrup King Building (Sculpture Garden), the Casket Arts Building (where Franconia Sculpture Park is featuring a number of sculptures), the California Building, the Modern Cafe, SIP coffee shop, Shuga records, and others. Maps with all specific locations and artists will be available at the NKB, California, and Casket Arts buildings. Other places will be added as the summer months continue, as part of First Thursday Open Studios. It should be a fun and exciting summer with lots of art to look forward to.

Hope to see you this weekend for Art A Whirl!

Cult Sisters #2
Cult Status Gallery Minneapolis
2913 Harriet Avenue South
Minneapolis, MN

Opening Reception: Saturday, May 14 at 7:30pm

This year's salute to bad ass female artists of the TC reads like a who's who in the local gallery scene: 3 artists on MNOriginal, 4 gallery directors/coordinators, and 12 women whos' art, when viewed collectively, reads and not as 'female' work, but more as 'radically hip and well executed' work. It is an impossible feat trying to describe the diverse talents and accomplishments this group possesses. With: Kristen Arden, JM Culver, Louisa Greenstock, Kate Keke Hall, Amina Harper, Kara Hendershot, Alison Hiltner, Gina Louise, Rhea Pappas, Wendy Petersen (aka Claire Monet), Erin Sayer, and Tonja Torgerson.
